NEET 2020
“National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Undergraduate” is also called “NEET-UG” or “NEET”. NEET is a medical entrance examination conducted in India. It's as a test to determine the eligibility of students for admission to undergraduate medical programs, including MBBS.
Until 2019, to get admission to any of the medical universities in India, NEET was mandatory. NEET was not applicable for MBBS admissions in:
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
- Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry.
AIIMS and JIPMER were allowed to conduct separate medical entrance test. From 2020 onwards, MBBS admissions to all the medical institutions are made through NEET. This change complies with the enforcement of the National Medical Council Act. From 2020, to take MBBS admission in AIIMS and JIPMER as well, you need to qualify NEET.
Since 2019, NEET is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). NTA is an independent organization established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India (GOI). NTA makes all the arrangements for student registrations for NEET, the conduct of the examination, and declaration of results.
This guide is prepared for NEET students to provide information about NEET 2020. In this NEET 2020 guide, we will discuss all about NEET 2020 that you need to know, right from applying for NEET registration to the declaration of NEET results and everything in between. NEET 2020 Qualification Criteria: NEET Percentile
In NEET, there is no such thing as “qualifying percentage” or “cut-off percentage.” NEET passing score is determined by the “qualifying percentile” or “cut-off percentile.”
We will discuss the “NEET qualifying percentile” or “NEET cut-off percentile” in a moment. Before that, let’s have a quick look at qualifying percentile for NEET 2020 which is tabulated below:
Student Category
|
Minimum Percentile Required
|
Unreserved/ General
|
50th Percentile: Means performs better than 50% of the participants.
|
Unreserved (with benchmark disability)
|
45th Percentile: Means performs better than 45% of the participants.
|
Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes (with or without benchmark disability)
|
40th Percentile: Means performs better than 40% of the participants.
|
Important Note Regarding Qualifying NEET
NEET 2020 Information Bulletin states:
“Merely appearing and qualifying in NEET (UG) - 2020 does not confer any right to the candidate for admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses. The selection and admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses seats in any Medical Institution recognized for offering Undergraduate Medical Courses is subject to fulfilling the admission criteria, eligibility, rank in merit list, medical fitness and such other criteria as may be prescribed by the Government of India, respective States, Universities, Institutions, and Medical/Dental/Ayurveda/Siddha/Unani/Homeopathy Colleges.”
Percentile is not just based on your own percentage. It is determined by the percentage of other candidates.
Your success in NEET is not determined by “how well you performed.” It is determined by “how well you performed in comparison to other candidates.”
To be in the 50th percentile doesn’t imply that you need to score 50%. 50th percentile means that you need to outperform 50% of the candidates who took the NEET exam. That means your NEET score needs to be higher than 50% of the candidates who participated in the NEET examination.
Similarly, for being in the 40th percentile, you need to outperform 40% of the candidates who participated in NEET. It means you need to perform better than 40% of the candidates. 40th percentile means that your NEET score should be in the list of top 60% performers in NEET.
Percentile
|
Meaning
|
50th Percentile
|
Perform better than 50% of the candidates.
|
45th Percentile
|
Perform better than 45% of the candidates.
|
40th Percentile
|
Perform better than 40% of the candidates.
|
The more percentile requirement means that you need to perform better than more of the candidates.
|
In competitive exams like NEET, the number of seats is fewer than the number of students hunting. So, there is no such thing as “NEET passing marks.” Your success is NEET is determined not only by their own marks but also influenced by how much marks other students have scored. Students scoring best scores get admissions for the available medical seats. That’s where the concept of NEET cut-off comes into play.
Based on NEET results, NTA releases the All India Merit List as well as the NEET cut-off list. The list contains the name of the qualifying candidates, along with their NEET rank.
To get admission in medical colleges, you need to score high enough to get into the cut-off list. If you score good enough to get your name into the cut-off list and fulfill other eligibility requirements, you are good to get admission for MBBS and under undergraduate medical programs.
NEET 2020 Preparation Tips
While there is no shortage of suggestions on “How to prepare for NEET?” Here are a few of the suggestions that will help you build and implement a thoughtful strategy for NEET 2020 preparation:
Make Study Schedule For NEET 2020
While “SMART” goals advice is a buzz thing these days, it is effective too. SMART refers to Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, and Timely.
Here is how, in the context of NEET 2020 preparation, SMART Goals can help you build a foolproof study schedule for NEET 2020 and achieve success in NEET 2020 results:
SMART Element
|
Description
|
Specific
|
Target specific topics from specific chapters of subjects in the given time.
|
Measurable
|
What percentage of syllabus you are going to complete on each day of the schedule?
|
Assignable
|
Well, under the NEET preparation strategy, all tasks are to be completed by you. So, all the tasks shall be assigned to you.
|
Realistic
|
We all know our limits. So, be realistic. Don’t set unrealistic targets. For example: If you set a target to complete ten chapters in a day, you are definitely going to miss that target. It’s unrealistic. Set realistic targets and be consistent.
|
Timely
|
For every goal, set a timeline. Add an element of “by when.” A deadline for everything is important to push you towards achieving your daily targets.
|
To achieve success in NEET 2020, define by what time you will be completing what portion of your syllabus.
Break the entire NEET syllabus into small chunks, study daily, and be consistent. Also, make sure to make space for proper revisions. The revision will make sure that you can recall in the exam what you studied. If you do all of this, you will be significantly improving the chances of your success in NEET.
Decide Study Resources
Today, thanks to the internet and easy availability of information, countless online preparation courses and books are available to prepare for NEET. While that’s a good thing, it is important to keep yourself on hold and don’t get lost in the overwhelming ocean of information.
Before you start preparing for NEET, decide which online/ offline courses and coaching classes you will join. Also, decide which NEET books you will refer to. To select the best reference books for NEET 2020, you can:
- Ask for guidance from your teachers;
- Consult with other students who have already qualified NEET; and
- Ask the fellow NEET students for suggestions in person or an online forum.
Based on feedback from all these sources, you can prepare a list of best online and offline NEET preparation courses. Similarly, you can also prepare a list of best books for NEET 2020.
While this exercise may seem to be time-consuming, it will worth every second of yours. It will shape your entire study plan for the better.
Attend NEET Test Series
Besides NCERT books for NEET 2020, core study material, and other reference books, online test series form an essential ingredient in the NEET preparation strategy. For NEET, numerous test series are available online, free as well as paid.
To take your NEET preparation one step further, make a list of best online test series for NEET 2020. Attending test series will help you catch up on your weak areas and make them strong with extra efforts. The best part is that mistakes that you will make during test series will save you in the real examination. In the exam, you definitely will not repeat those mistakes! Will you?
Keep An Eye On Your Health
You are studying to become a doctor and make positive changes in the health of people’s life. To achieve your goal, you need to take charge of your health first.
In the haste to study more and more, we see students sacrificing their sleep time. Students also cut on sports activities and physical exercise and rely on junk food to eat on the go, saving time! Well, all these fancy time-saving and productivity techniques do not benefit anyone.
Stay active. Eat healthy food. Study as per schedule. Sleep well. Following this approach will set you apart. Your focus will go up, and you will be able to study more in less time.
Mind Your Online Activity
In the digital age, nothing is as time-wasting as pursuing mindless activities online for an unlimited time. If you want to make a career in medicine, stop wasting time on activities like scrolling through social media, playing games, chatting with strangers online with no purpose at all, and other such non-productive activities. Qualifying NEET And MBBS Admissions
Only NEET qualification doesn’t entitle you to get admission to the MBBS Program of any medical university. The reason is that every year, about seven lacs students qualify the examination. However, only about 70,000 medical seats are available.
The number of students who qualify NEET is ten times higher than the number of medical seats in India. That makes MBBS admissions highly competitive, even for NEET qualified students.
“Merely appearing and qualifying in NEET (UG) - 2020 does not confer any right to the candidate for admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses.”
- National Testing Agency
Also, medical universities abroad consider NEET score a test of your medical IQ. The higher, the better. So, if you want smooth admission to the MBBS Program of a medical university in India or abroad after your NEET qualification, aim for the top score.
Students who qualify low in NEET examination have very poor chances of getting MBBS admissions in comparison to students who score high marks. It is worth repeating that NEET qualification is not a guarantee for MBBS Admissions.
To get one of the limited MBBS seats, you need to score well enough to get your name on the cut-off list. Besides the NEET score, universities can also include other requirements under their respective MBBS admission eligibility criteria.
